Description

SAND-SILENCE-SOLITUDE is a symphonic work for concert bands, composed by Vaclav Nelhybel, which remains wrapped in mystery.

It is unknown when and for what opportunity this work was written, and only estimated it was written around the year 1980 from its elaborate texture. The piece has not been performed while the composer’s lifetime. It would be a little doubtful, however, if the composer wrote not only score but also parts with no commission and no planned performance.

This piece is a single-movement work built in three sections “slow-fast-slow”. Each of the three sections subtitled Lento I, Tumultoso, and Lento II is connected with a short transition and performed with no pause. In the middle section, Tumultoso literally has a rough and wild character. Lento II is a variant of Lento I. Thus it is difficult to believe the triple title SAND-SILENCE-SOLITUDE reflects the framework of the work. The music begins quietly with a D-F-D motif, develops elaborately, psychologically, and sometimes violently, and closes with an expanded powerful D-F-D figure.

The composition was world premiered in Japan by Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Green-Tie Wind Ensemble in Maeda Hall, Yokohama, on December 11, 2018, conducted by Douglas Bostock.
