De Profundis (Out of the Depths) for Solo Trumpet and Wind Ensemble was commissioned in 1975 by the Robert E. Lee High School Symphonic Band, Baytown, Texas, and its director Charles E. Forque (1930-2005) so that they can play together with the famous trumpeter ‘Doc’ Severinsen (1927-). It was premiered by the commissioner and the soloist on May 31 of the year. In 1983 while Forque was working for the Plano Senior High School Band in the same city, they performed the work with ‘Doc”, and their live recording is available on the CD album “The Lost Tapes Vol. I & II” (CD Baby). Minor differences between the live performance and this edition are found yet details are unknown.

The title itself is taken from “Psalm 130” in the New Testament.

Out of the depths, I cry to you, Lord;

Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,

This work can be understood as a trumpet concertino in effect. The entire music consists of two successive parts: The first part is a lonely song as if groping in the dark, and the second part beginning with a heavy pesante goes through a graceful hymn, develops into a powerful and brilliant main part, and then reaches a solemn coda. It is not only a work demanding full features of the versatile techniques of the soloist, but also a deeply emotional work based on religious implications. Duration is circa 14 min 30 sec.

独奏トランペットとウインドアンサンブルのための《深い淵より》は、1975年にテキサス州ベイタウンのロバート・E・リー高校バンドとその指揮者チャールズ・E・フォーク（1930-2005）から、著名なトランペット奏者ドク・セヴェリンセン（1927-）と共演するために作曲を委嘱された。同年5月31日、この委嘱者と独奏者によって初演されている。1983年にフォークが当時勤務する同市のプラーノ高校バンドとセヴェリンセンと共に再演したライブ録音がCDアルバム『ザ・ロスト・テープスVol. I & II』（CD Baby）で入手できる。この演奏とこの楽譜の間には小さな違いがあるが、詳細は不明。

曲名は『新訳聖書』の「詩篇第130篇」から引用されている。

この作品は事実上のトランペット小協奏曲と理解できる。全体は連続する2つの部分からなり、第1部は闇の中を手探りで進むような孤独な曲で、第2部は重厚なペザンテに始まり、優美な讃美歌を経て力強く輝かしい主部に展開され、荘厳な終結を迎える。ソリストの多彩なテクニックを十分に発揮するだけでなく、宗教的な内容に基づく感動的な作品である。演奏時間は約14分30秒。
