German composer and conductor Richard Strauss was noted for his symphonic works, including Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, Also Sprach Zarathurstra, and his opera Der Rosenkavalier. He completed the Festmusik der Stadt Wien on January 14, 1943, while wintering in Vienna (Wien). The leader of the Trompetenkorps der Stadt Wien asked him to compose a work for them. This stellar group included 22 members of the brass sections, along with percussion of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony, and the Volksoper Orchestra.
