Description
The composition depicts a chase, driven by high-energy ostinati across the instrument groups that characterize the relentless pursuit. The brass theme is a prime example of this driving force. The entire piece is saturated with energetic motifs, offering virtually no point of rest.
A cinematic opening foreshadows the chase. After this introduction, the music briefly subsides in volume, allowing a pulse to emerge in the timpani. Above this pulse, tension gradually builds through a crawling figure in the horns. This underlying pulse is almost never released. The brass theme then enters in full force.
Throughout the chase, a victory theme repeatedly emerges and ultimately prevails, bringing the pursuit to its conclusion. The work closes with a final, triumphant statement of the brass theme.
