Description

I. Allegro maestoso
II. Adagio teneramente
III. Capricious
IV. Finale

When Dutch composer Twan Swagten (b. 2000) embarked on his journey as a composer, he strongly felt the urge to compose a big orchestral piece. When he was just 18 years old, he started his first Symphony in D minor which led to nothing – he did not finish it. It was an experiment, but the idea of a symphony was still in his mind. In the summer of 2022, he finally succeeded. He completed all four movements of the new symphony in just two months. The following period was filled with intensive labor when he continued editing and revising the work until it was finished at the beginning of 2023.

The Symphony is a non-programmatic work with a traditional four-movement structure rooted in the symphonic tradition since Beethoven. The nature of the piece is grounded in lyrical melodies and grand gestures, but also in minimal music. Especially movements three and four can be called minimal, with the repetitiveness and the strong pulse. Movements one and two are the most lyrical. In this symphony, he tried to grasp all his inspirations together to create a monumental work of art.
