Description

…autumn foliage… is a composition for piano, composed in September 2018.

One may have wandered around in the woods in autumn and been struck by the beauty of the forest where the leaves have changed from green to red, orange, or yellow. Such a phenomenon is called the autumn foliage.

Around the time of the composition, I was inspired by the music of Japanese composers, for example, Toru Takemitsu (武満 徹), Ryuichi Sakamoto (坂本 龍一), Joe Hisaishi (久石 譲). I have found that their music gives a unique feeling and atmosphere.

Therefore in this piece, I have tried to depict such a feeling and atmosphere in this work by implementing the harmonization of the fourth-fifth (quintal-quartal harmony), the simplicity of the melody, and the importance of using spaces between each event. In terms of programmatic, I imagined the landscape and scene of the aforementioned woods in the autumn, thus the title of the composition …autumn foliage…
